LILY TOMLIN WANTS YOU TO KNOW ABOUT ELEPHANT SUFFERING IN ZOOS



Elephants were never meant to live in the confinement of small urban zoos, where they are suffering terribly every day. That's why I’m urging everyone to get involved in the first International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos on June 20th and help bring about the mammoth changes that elephants so desperately need.

International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos A Worldwide Success This first annual event saw protests in 30 cities in seven countries. Elephant advocates worldwide donned elephant costumes, held banners, signs, and gave out thousands of flyers educating the public about the harmful effects of zoo captivity on elephants, earth's largest land mammal. Turnout was fantastic, and the educational benefits of this day were magnified many times by the news coverage of this issue. Based on the reactions of zoo goers to our outreach efforts, awareness of the plight of elephants in zoos is increasing. We know that an educated public is the key to change.

Victory: Ailing Elephants Spared From Performing In Idaho. Time to Renew Congressional pressure on the USDA to save them now! Thanks to our members who called and emailed the El Korah Shriners in response to our alert, Tina, Jewel and Queenie will not be performing in their Idaho shows. IDA and our members wrote to the Shriners to describe the suffering of these elephants and the danger to the circus-going public if they were used to perform. On June 18, IDA received a statement from the El Korahs' "Recorder” saying: "The elephants are not in Idaho and will not be participating in the Shrine Circus." More>
