Contact: KatieA@peta.org or 202-540-2185. Please write “Help elephants in Washington, D.C.” in the subject line when responding.
Comments: This Saturday is International Day of Action for Elephants in Zoos and activists across the country are taking time out of their day to speak up for these captive animals. Elephants imprisoned in zoos are denied everything that is natural to them—they are torn from their families and lush homes to live lonely lives in tiny, desolate enclosures. Many of these elephants suffer from mental anguish, malnutrition, and disease and perish after only a few years, whereas in the wild, they would live happily for decades. Please join local activists to let zoo attendees and passersby know these elephants belong in the wild, not behind bars. Can we count on you to be their voice? Some materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own signs.

Comments: Former Philadelphia Zoo inmates Kallie and Bette, 28-year-old African elephants stolen from their families in Zimbabwe as babies, were shipped to the Pittsburgh Zoo's breeding-holding facility in July 2009.

Since then, neither the Philadelphia Zoo or the Pittsburgh Zoo has posted any photos, video, or updates on the elephants except for a staged media event in July 2009, and an announcement in February 2010 that zoos decided the elephants are too unhealthy to be bred.

At the breeding-holding facility, the elephants are dominated with bullhooks and confined in small pens of just a few acres. They don't have free access to a water source for either drinking or bathing. The wonderful Performing Animal Welfare Society in California offered to give Kallie, Bette and Petal (who died in June 2008) a lifetime home at no charge over three years ago, but the Philadelphia Zoo refused to send them. Instead, Kallie and Bette are being warehoused in Central Pennsylvania and could be sent to another zoo, or back to the Philadelphia Zoo if it raises enough money to build a new exhibit. Because the Philadelphia Zoo has lied to the public by claiming that Kallie and Bette were sent to a sanctuary, much of the public is unaware of the true situation. Please join us to raise awareness of the facts of Kallie and Bette's status, and of the lives of elephants in zoos in general.
